Diamond Clarity Guide: Understanding Clarity Grading
Clarity measures the presence of internal and external imperfections, known as inclusions and blemishes. Higher clarity diamonds are more transparent, rare, and valuable.
Common Clarity Grades
- FL (Flawless): No internal or surface flaws visible under 10x magnification. Extremely rare.
- IF (Internally Flawless): No internal flaws, minor surface blemishes may exist.
- VVS1 & VVS2 (Very, Very Slight Inclusions): Tiny inclusions visible only to skilled graders under magnification, nearly invisible to the naked eye.
- VS1 & VS2 (Very Slight Inclusions): Small inclusions, usually invisible to the naked eye.
- SI1 & SI2 (Slight Inclusions): Noticeable under magnification, some may be visible to the naked eye.
- I1–I3 (Included): Obvious inclusions, visible to the naked eye, affecting brilliance and appearance.
Factors Affecting Clarity
- Location: Flaws near the center are more noticeable.
- Size and Quantity: Larger or more numerous inclusions lower the clarity grade.
- Type: Different types of inclusions (dots, feathers, crystals) affect visual impact differently.
Tips
- Most buyers choose VS or SI grades for excellent value with virtually invisible flaws.
- For investment or collector-grade diamonds, IF or VVS grades are recommended.
